CANCELLED DUE TO RAIN: Mitawan Prescribed Burn scheduled for Thursday
Jun 02, 2021 05:21PM ● By EditorFrom the Superior National Forest Gunflint Ranger District - June 2, 2021
The project area is located 6 miles northwest of the community of Isabella in between Grouse and Mitawan Lakes.
The Mitawan prescribed fire project consists of 6 separate units totaling 212 acres of which 139 acres were burned in May of 2019. Crews will begin preparation for the remaining 73 acres as access to the site becomes available.
Prescribed fire will be used under favorable conditions to reduce natural and masticated activity fuel. The removal of these fuels with prescribed fire will prepare the site for natural pine seeding by removing competing vegetation and exposing the mineral soil to receive seeds from overstory trees. Prescribed fire will also aid in the reduction of vegetative fuels that could increase the potential for a wildfire to start and spread.
No closure of recreation sites or roadways are anticipated with this prescribed fire. If fire managers determine that smoke from the prescribed fire is likely to negatively impact visibility within the campground area, warning signs will be placed in the campground area and access road. USFS personnel will be available on-site during ignition to provide information to the public.
