Lake Superior received more precipitation than usual during April, but it wasn't enough to make up for a deficit over the past year.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' monthly bulletin on lake levels says Lake Superior received 2.6 inches (6.6 cm) of precipitation in April compared with a 118-year average of 2.05 inches (5.2 cm). The lake has received 25.42 inches (64.6 cm) of precipitation over the last 12 months, compared with the annual average of 30.59 inches (77.7 cm).

Meanwhile, the International Lake Superior Board of Control says the lake rose 3.2 inches (8 cm) in April, which is typical for the month as the lake begins is usual seasonal rise. An updated Corps chart predicts Lake Superior will continue to remain at above-average levels for the next six months.

Despite remaining higher than usual, the Board of Control says Lake Superior is a 3.9 inches (10 cm) lower than it was last year at this time. It's 7.9 inches (20 cm) above the long-term average.

With continued high water levels, the board continues to warn people about the potential for severe coastal impacts, especially during windy weather.

While April was a wet month for Lake Superior, other Great Lakes received below-average precipitation. The Corps Lake Erie rose two inches and Lake Ontario rose five inches, while the other lakes remained near their March levels.
