Great Expectations School News

May Greetings, Families!

What hope and joy this time of year brings, as life bursts forth in every living thing!  GES classrooms are also alive with projects, both inside the building and out.  The Bear Cubs continue their study of our community and had an outdoor visit from our local dentist, Alyssa Hedstrom, yesterday.  The Fawns and Beavers are taking exploration trips to the beach and EDA woods.  Wolves classrooms are immersing themselves in all things "Wagons West", as they learn about a different time period in American History.  The Lynx are learning about our local, Cook County history as they have the wonderful opportunity to begin reading local author Staci Drouillard's book, Walking the Old Road, a historical look at Chippewa City and the Grand Marais Anishinaabe. Otters are taking a larger look at the globe, as they continue the detailed work of mapping the world!  No small task!  This is balanced by  energizing Wednesday morning video stream classes with drummer/educator, Mark Powers.  Mark is teaching our 7th and 8th graders how to play box-shaped percussion instruments called cajons.  These cajons were constructed by a previous Otters class and are played by rapping the sides of the instrument with the hands or various mallets, etc.  The sound is incredible, and we look forward to hearing more of it coming from the Otters classroom!

IMPORTANT DATES & EVENTS

YES!  THERE WILL BE A PLANT SALE! - Mark your calendar for the weekend of May 22 & 23 for the Annual GES Plant Sale!   It brings much hope, seeing all the plants at their various stages of growth in the greenhouse and under grow lights throughout the building.  This year's sale will include sign-up safe-distance shopping for families and most previous customers.  Watch for the SignUpGenius next week, as well as a volunteer sign up. The Plant Sale couldn't take place without the help of many hands!

YEARBOOK! - It's not too late to place a yearbook order!  Please send $13 (cash or check to GES) to school with your child.  Payments are collected in the classroom and brought to the office.  This year's album includes many fun shots of students learning and playing, despite the restrictions of a pandemic!  We think families will enjoy it.

MAY GREAT LUNCH MENU

OTHER GREAT LUNCH NEWS
 -   Thank you to those who responded to the reminder to order school lunch online at ezschoolapps.com.  You are making a difference!  Please continue!

Photo of the week: The Lynx class is an exciting group who holds a special place in our GES community. As 5th and 6th graders, Lynx students are among the older students in our community, and begin to take on more responsibilities. Some of the ways they show leadership around the school include sorting the school's recycling and being paired with younger reading buddies. In the classroom, the Lynx have spent this year learning about Minnesota, from studying our local history in Theme to learning to identify trees in Science. In addition to their hard work, this dynamic bunch also knows how have fun. Here the Lynx all donned pigtails for a Lynx pigtail club photo. We love our Lynx class! - Rae
As always, please call the office if you have any questions on school related items.  I am glad to assist you!
