On Friday, seven new recruits wrapped up their training during a series of simulated fires at Lake Superior College’s Emergency Response Training School.

“We get to come out here and run through scenarios,” Christopher Orman, an instructor said. Some of the scenarios included entering burning structures and saving simulated victims, as well as, extinguishing the flames of a burning car.

Orman, who has been with the department for 14 years, said training like this is second to none.

“You could go a year without getting into a structure fire or you could go a year without ever breaking a window. You could also go a career without ever having to rescue somebody, so I would say the value is infinite because of the amount of opportunities that we can create out here rather than wait for,” Orman said.

Duluth Native Evan Jamar was one of the seven recruits participating Friday.

“This is really the real deal, so we feel very fortunate to be a part of this,” Jamar said.

Jamar hopes to use the training he receives to help anyone who may be in trouble with professionalism and compassion.

“I know that if my grandparents had an issue and called 911, they’d want to be handled the way that I would come in and treat them. I think that everybody kind of thinks about their own family and friends and how they would step up for that,” Jamar said.

After completing Friday’s training, recruits will begin at the Duluth Fire Station this next week, where they will be on a probationary period on the rigs for one year. Jamar said that he is looking forward to it.

“All seven of us will be starting out at Headquarters,” Jamar said. “It will be great to get to know everyone.”

This fall, the Fire Department will be hiring again.

Lake Superior College plans to host Firefighter I and II and Hazmat courses beginning in August. Those who want to apply for opening Duluth Fire jobs will need these courses in order to apply.
