Each year, the Northland sees nearly 90 inches of snow. According to the National Weather Service, Duluth has seen 72.5 so far this season.

Come spring, where does all this snow go and what does it mean for homeowners?

“When we see the snow melt, all of that water goes into the soil and it has to go somewhere,” Joe Moore, Meteorologist with the National Weather Service said. “So, if you don’t have proper drainage around your home, that water can start coming into your home.”

Mary Draeger, a West Duluth homeowner, has witnessed this phenomenon firsthand after living in her home for 24 years.

“My basement was always wet,” Draeger said.

This year, she decided to take action by installing a sump pump.

“What I had done to my house was put in a drain system by a company called DBS,” Draeger said.

So far, she is happy with the results.

“I will tell you, I am surprised at the amount of water that has been pumped out of my basement,” Draeger said.

James Miller, Design Specialist for DBS, recommends all home owners consider installing a sump pump.

“Keeping water out of your basement is key. Basements, crawl spaces, anything like that where water could infiltrate or seep in,” Miller said.

If you already have a sump pump, but don't know how to use it, Miller says to reach out for help.

“Have a professional come out there, you know, flow test it, check it out, make sure its functioning properly,” Miller said.

As we enter spring and snow causes run-off, Miller says properly maintained gutters are also key.

All of these things can help prevent your home from flooding.
