As people are resetting clocks around their home in light of Daylight Saving, the Duluth Fire Department recommends they check their smoke detectors.

Captain Dan Smith with the Duluth Fire Department said that typically, smoke detectors should be checked every month to insure they are working and batteries should be replaced every six months to insure they are good, but Daylight Saving is a great time to check them again.

“It is a life changing deal. Statistically, working smoke detectors can reduce the chance of death in a home fire by half, Smith said. “We go to a lot of fires that don't have working smoke detectors and it’s a life saving device.”

Smith said people should have a working smoke detector in every bedroom and hallway of their house.

He adds that checking out carbon monoxide detectors in honor of Daylight Saving is also recommended.
