It is time to celebrate winter with the Lake Superior Ice Festival, to be held Friday and Saturday, January 29th and 30th. This is a free, family-friendly event on Barker's Island in Superior. Organizers say the festival will follow the CDC and Douglas County Health Department guidelines for every event held during the festival weekend.

The public will be encouraged to wear masks and follow social distance guidelines to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Superior Mayor Jim Paine said in a Lake Superior Ice Festival press release, that the city has had good luck with outdoor events.

"To the best of my knowledge, outdoor gatherings responsibly planned have not been traced back to be a source for COVID-19 infection," Paine said in the release. "We have had good luck with outdoor events and will be taking proper precautions to ensure this event is held as safely as possible.”

Organizers do suggest if you have concerns or experiencing COVID-like symptoms, you should stay home.

This year's festival includes the snow slide, an Island Disc Golf course, Learn to Play Kubb, Midwest Ice Racing Association and Lake Superior Ice Racing Association races.

Take a pictures with the ice princesses and other characters. You can make your own snow creations at Fairlawn Mansion and watch the crowning of the K-9 King and Queen of the Festival hosted by the Humane Society of Douglas County. The event will have a chilling Fireworks display at 6:00 pm on Saturday.  More event details to come…

"The Lake Superior Ice Festival is such a fantastic event for both visitors and locals alike! The festival is a wonderful collaboration of community organizations coming together to make one fantastic and inviting event for attendees of all ages and interests," President and CEO of the Superior Douglas County Area Chamber of Commerce and Travel Superior, Taylor Pedersen said in the release. "There is so much going on during this winter event that all attendees are sure to find something to catch their interests."
