The U.S. Coast Guard has kicked off icebreaking operations on western Lake Superior as colder weather heads to the region.

On Monday, the U.S. Coast Guard Sector Sault Sainte Marie kicked off "Operation Taconite" and assigned the Biscayne Bay to manage icebreaking needs in Duluth, Superior, and Thunder Bay. Additional icebreakers will join the operation as ice growth expands on the Great Lakes.

The Coast Guard is reminding recreational users to stay away from shipping channels and use caution on ice.

The Soo Locks, which allow vessels to travel between Lake Superior and the other Great Lakes, will be open until Jan. 15.
