Minnesota’s firearms deer season begins half an hour before sunrise on Saturday and the Department of Natural Resources expects nearly half a million hunters to participate.

Ahead of it's start Chris Balzer, an area wildlife manager offered some advice to hunters.

Concerning COVID-19 precautions, Balzer pointed out that hunting is already a socially distant activity, but he did caution against groups of people camping out together.

While there has been national ammo shortages, Balzer said that he doesn’t imagine that hunters will have to go without, but did acknowledge that it could potentially get tight and that hunters should plan ahead.

Due to a couple harsh winters, he says that the area north of Grand Rapids and Duluth won’t be the best for deer hunting, but that hunters will certainly be able to scout out deer there.

Instead, he recommends the area south of Grand Rapids and Duluth as recent winters were less harsh and he believes that more deer will be located there.

For new hunters, he reminds them that they need a license before they go hunting, which can be purchased throughout the season, and he highly recommends that they get a mentor.

Firearms deer season is one of several seasons for deer hunters. Archery deer season opened Sept. 19 and lasts through Thursday, Dec. 31. Muzzleloader deer season is from Saturday, Nov. 28, through Sunday, Dec. 13.
