Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin and other lawmakers are introducing legislation Baldwin says will increase the icebreaking capacity of the Great Lakes fleet.
Baldwin says the Great Lakes Winter Commerce Act is intended to address "inadequate" icebreaking capacity in the Great Lakes.
She adds it will also help the many businesses and workers that rely on the maritime industry to transport goods.
"We have billions of dollars of commerce that takes place year round in the Great Lakes and when they can't break through, that is something that affects jobs, affects commerce and our export capacity," Baldwin said.
Specifically, Baldwin says the bill would update the "outdated" metrics for the U.S. Coast Guard's icebreaking mission.
