Unicorns do exist! 

That’s the tongue-in-cheek message from U.S. Coast Guard, which found an inflatable shaped like the mythical creature floating in Lake Superior on Wednesday. 

“It’s not every day that you get a call to respond to a floating unicorn,” a Facebook post from Station Marquette reads. “But yesterday was that day. When we say that we train for any situation, we mean it.” 

Unicorns, of course, have been featured in mythology from cultures across the globe for centuries. They are usually described as a horse or goatlike beast with a single large, pointed, spiraling horn projecting from its forehead.

And while the unique find presented an opportunity for the Coast Guard to have some fun with followers, officials are also taking the opportunity to remind boaters to have items properly stored and secured when not in use, since large objects like a floating plastic unicorn could be hazardous to fast-moving watercraft. 

“Please make sure to secure all of your floats, mythical or not, and put your name and contact information on them just in case,” the post concludes.
