Many spent the day Saturday picking up broken branches, finding furniture that blew away and assessing the cost of storm damage after heavy rain and strong winds swept across the Northland Friday night.

Captain Steve Trenhaile of the Moose Lake Fire Department said severe winds blew through Carlton County between 7:00 and 9:00pm Friday—breaking tree branches and blowing buildings apart.

“What we were looking at was trees across the road for about 150-250 feet that had been snapped and then tossed onto the road,” Trenhaile said. “We believe it was probably a funnel cloud.”

Out West in Crow Wing County, authorities are also investigating the possibility of a funnel cloud touching down after an aerial shot showed a number of run down trees.

In Douglass County, the 2000 block of Huighitt Avenue in Superior was hit hard by strong winds that broke tree branches and smashed the windshield of a car.

John D'Auria, a resident of one of the homes on the block described the storm.

“First you just hear basic rain and then it started getting a little windy. But then, the wind picked up so fast that it almost sounded like a train coming and then I heard a huge boom, which ended up being a tree branch hitting my living room window. Within 30 seconds, the whole storm was over,” D’Auria said.

In Itasca County, heavy rain led to flooding, which some made the most of by canoeing.

And in Aitkin, Cass and St. Louis counties, strong wind led to downed trees and power lines.
