Thursday, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development announced the state's unemployment was 8.6% in June.

That's a drop from 9.9% in May.

Thursday, it was reported by the Associated Press that 1.3 million laid-off workers were seeking unemployment benefits in the U.S.

Number of laid-off workers seeking jobless aid stuck at 1.3M

DEED also reported 84,700 payroll jobs were added in June. About 84,400 of those jobs were in the private sector and 300 were government jobs.

According to DEED, the leisure and hospitality industry saw the biggest growth, with 35,300 jobs added.

Along with the dropping unemployment rate, the federal $600 additional unemployment payments will end at the end of July. Unless the program ends up being extended by the federal government, the last week of the payments in Minnesota will be the week that ends July 25.
