Around 265 teams of two, about 530 total anglers, cast off in local lakes or rivers for bass or walleye. Since the event was virtual, anglers were allowed to fish any body closest to their homes.

Students from Cromwell-Wright, Grand Rapids, North Woods, and Northwestern were some of the Northlanders battling to reel in the biggest catch.

After fishing from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., competitors submitted photos of their catches online. They were judged and verified by organizers, who looked at weight, length, and the total number of fish.

The winners were announced on a Zoom and Facebook Live stream following the event.

"The winner is a team we know well up in this country, another Brainerd team, Erickson and Johnson. They won it today [and] their largest fish was 21 inches, which also brings them as the Big Fish winner,"announced Stephen Picht on Zoom, a Student Angler Tournament Trail board member.

A team from Northwestern High School, Nelson and Mazur, cracked the top ten as they finished in eighth place with nine fish totaling 130 inches.
