The Douglas County Sheriff says a 6-year-old Duluth boy died in the waters of Lake Superior in Douglas County Wednesday afternoon. His body was pulled out around 7 p.m.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office says several children were in waste-deep water when a 9-year-old girl and the 6-year-old boy encountered a dropoff.

The girl was revived after being brought to shore, but the boy was still missing.

This prompted a multi-agency search effort. The scene was at the mouth of the Middle River. Authorities staged at the end of Middle River Road in the Town of Lakeside, north of Poplar.

Crews were called there at 1:39 p.m. Lakeside Fire Chief Nova Nordrum said water clarity was a challenge, and the current was up and down throughout the afternoon.

At least eight agencies were on the scene, including the U.S. Coast Guard, volunteer firefighters from the Lakeside, Amnicon, and Maple departments, the Douglas and St. Louis County Sheriff's offices, the Wisconsin DNR, and Superior Police.

The incident is under investigation by the Douglas County Sheriff's and Medical Examiner's Offices.
