Governor Tim Walz signed 11 bills into law Saturday, including raising the state's age to buy tobacco and e-cigarettes to 21.

With that signing, Minnesota becomes the 25th state to adopt the Tobacco 21 law.

The goal of it is to keep tobacco products out of middle and high schools.

“At the end of the day, our job is to keep Minnesotans safe,” Governor Walz said. “These strong bipartisan measures will improve public health and reduce preventable health risks. Raising the age to buy tobacco to 21 will help stop addiction before it starts and save young lives.”

Many cities in the Northland have already adopted the law. That includes Duluth, Hermantown, Cloquet, Hibbing and Bemidji.

Statewide, 73 cities and counties have raised the tobacco age to 21.
