Gov. Tim Walz is discouraging people from traveling very far to fish on Minnesota's Fishing Opener Saturday.

"Stay close to home. Fill up with gas at home. Don't stop and use a lot of the things that you would normally do if you're going to go fish," Walz said at Thursday afternoon's press conference.

He said while there won't be blockades at the borders, they don't want people from neighboring states to come into Minnesota to fish.

"This is not about defying an order that I put out," Gov. Walz said. "This is about defying public health warnings. This is about defying the science of how this stuff spreads."

The governor said while he knows it's getting frustrating, he's asking people to keep complying with his Stay at Home order.

"Stay close to home, use common sense. Fish on a new lake. Don't travel across state lines," he said.
