The Minnesota fishing season will still happen on May 9. However, the Governor's celebration in Otter Tail County has been postponed to 2021.

It will now take place May 6-9, 2021.

"We want to give a special thank you to everybody up in Otter Tail County, community leaders who have been planning this for well over a year," Gov. Tim Walz said in his Wednesday afternoon update.

The governor encouraged people to still get out fishing but keep a safe distance.

The Governor's Fishing Opener has been a Minnesota tradition since 1948, celebrating the kickoff of the summer tourism season.

"This is a time-honored Minnesota tradition," Walz said. "It is like nothing else I've ever done. It's one of the most enjoyable weekends."
