The splash of aggregate and armour stone can be heard spilling into Lake Superior on a day when temperatures are dipping well below -30c. (22 below zero)

Shards of floating ice and a cool brisk wind can be felt as dump truck after dump truck arrives with another load.

This is all part of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canada plan to modify and repair this safe harbour on Lake Superior.

Once the harbour played to the interests of the largest silver mine in the 1800's which had a huge economic impact in the region at that time.

Now the area will have new opportunities to facilitate local summer residents and regional boaters with a new boat ramp, floating docks and break wall extension.

Commodore Briggs from the Thunder Bay Yacht Club said “we are excited to once again be able to use Silver islet as a safe harbour and destination” after being closed for many years.

With this added investment by the federal government it will give boaters access to Black Bay and the regional lighthouses along with lots of great fishing.

The work will continue through the winter months which hopefully will provide an opportunity this summer for more boating activities to take place in the area.
