Following the John Beargrease Sled Dog Marathon from home will be even easier this year.

The race is using a new GPS tracking system for the 14 full marathon mushers.

The new system comes through the Beargrease's participation in the QPAWS Arctic World Series

"If you're not familiar with the sport of mushing, it's kind of hard to follow because there's differentials and you've got to do math. Mushers have to take rest and the dogs have to take rest," Monica Hendrickson, Beargrease spokesperson, said.

The differentials and rest will be factored in for you with the new system.

The CopperDog 150, a sled dog race in Michigan, helped the Beargrease get the tracking off the ground. So did an international crew, including David Barbosa from France.

"We will report the positions of all the mushers each five minutes during the race," Barbosa said. "So we will be able to provide the live ranking, the speed of the mushers, the distance traveled, the distance to finish, many statistics about the race."

And all the data will be available 24/7 online. WDIO will provide it at wdio.com/johnbeargrease once the race starts. You can also find it at beargrease.com

The first mushers leave Billy's in Duluth Sunday at 11 a.m. The race is expected to finish Tuesday afternoon or evening at the Grand Portage Lodge and Casino.
