With the winter weather changing fire departments are also urging people who are going out on the ice to be careful.

Duluth Fire Chief Shawn Kirzaj says to check ice conditions before heading out to ice fish or snow mobile.

He adds, there are lake websites and resorts which always have current conditions.

And says it's important to have ice picks when you're out on the ice and floation devices in case the ice breaks or you fall in.

"We've had some good ice making weather earlier in the season and then when we got the snow, we we're actually loosing ice. What might've been safe a couple weeks ago could might actually not be safe today.

Krizaj says here in the Twin Ports there are ships still in the bay so be careful because they are breaking up the ice.
