But the popular winter activity can be deadly. The Minnesota DNR said that three people have died already this season. And there have been some close calls.

Bianchi shared some advice with us on Friday. "It's always recommended to ride with friends. It gets dark early, so when you're riding at night, make sure you never overdrive your headlights. The speed limit is 50 miles per hour, so make sure you stay under that."

Even though we got that huge dumping of snow over Thanksgiving weekend, all the trails haven't been fully groomed yet. "Groomers haven't been able to get out everywhere yet. You could end up running into some rocks and other things, since the base isn't solid yet everyhwere."

He also cautioned people who are on area lakes. "I was on Island Lake last Sunday, and it was pretty slushy." He said the snowfall has forced water through the ice, and there's a lot of slush out there right now. And all the snow insulates the ice, so it doesn't get thicker, until we get some sub-zero temperatures to really build ice.

And finally, he cautioned people to stay on the trails. "I've already heard of two trails closing because people were trespassing," he said.

3) Watch the speed.

4) Be careful on the ice.
