Here in the Northland, we start thinking about the first flakes of the season earlier than most.

Owner of Denny's Lawn & Garden in Duluth Scott Cyr said, "Right after Labor Day we always start getting a lot busier with snow questions and snow blowers coming in, sales and service."

Cyr said they've seen a spike in business this week due to the potential for snow to mix with rain this weekend.

As a weather system presents the chance for snow to mix with rain, MnDOT and the City of Duluth prepare to treat roads.

"Monday morning it was ringing non-stop and most of the week it has been," Cyr said, "They hear the word 'snow' and it makes them realize they've gotta get ready for it, because it may not come this weekend, but it might come the next weekend or weekend after."

When the snow does fall, MnDOT and the City of Duluth will be prepared to maintain the roads. MnDOT District 1 public affairs coordinator Beth Petrowske said, "We've done just a thorough check of the trucks to make sure everything's ready."

They've spent the week installing plows and preparing sand and salt. As they get winter weather ready, MnDOT encourages motorists to get into the winter driving mindset as they once again share the roads with plows.

"We advise them to stay ten car lengths behind our trucks because our operators have a limited field of vision," Petrowske said.

The Storm Team doesn't think most people of the Northland will need to worry about heavy accumulation in the coming weekend, but a wintry mix could still complicate travel conditions.
