The beermakers at Castle Danger will be bidding farewell on Monday to the growler, which it will no longer be allowed to sell.

The North Shore brewery, known for brews including its popular Cream Ale, is falling victim to a rule in state law that says breweries can no longer sell the 64 fl. oz. jugs of beer once their production hits 20,000 barrels sold a year.

With Castle Danger having hit that landmark, it's prohibited from selling them from Tuesday onwards.

It had called for changes to the law, getting support from local politicians and the Minnesota Craft Brewers Guild, which said the loss of growlers could potentially cost breweries up to $300,000.

But in the absence of any law change, the brewery is preparing to end its growler sales on Monday, where it will be throwing a party at its taproom until 10 p.m.

"Through Monday, we will accept all Castle Danger growler returns and will give you a full $5 refund for your growler as long as it’s in good condition," the brewery said on Facebook.
