Labor Day Weekend is officially upon us and the roads were steady with traffic Friday as people traveled to kick off the unofficial end of summer.

The Kayser family came from Hartford, South Dakota to spend the extended weekend in Two Harbors. Tara Kayser said, "Weather turned out to be gorgeous and had to come up." They visited the North Shore last summer and marked it as a place to return to.

Don Ohmann and Armond Krech make the trip up from Eagan to their same campground in Two Harbors every Labor Day. "We've been coming up here the last 6 or 7 years," Don said, "This is the spot, we keep coming back here."

It's the beauty of Lake Superior that keeps bringing both groups back each year. Don said, "It's so relaxing and enjoyable to sit here and watch Superior."

For the Kayser's, their two kids enjoy watching the ships pull into Two Harbors. Tara said, "We're gonna drive up and down the shoreline today is our main goal, and then we have the ships schedule written down and figured out when the big ships are coming in so we'll watch those too."

With the days leading in and out of Labor Day Weekend being some of the busiest travel days of the year, the Kayser's drove up to Two Harbors Thursday hoping to beat the Friday traffic.

It's easier for Don and Armond to add a couple of extra days to their Labor Day Weekend to avoid traffic because they're both retired.

"We came up on Wednesday," Armond said, "We're gonna miss it going home too, cuz we stay an extra day. We stay until Tuesday."

The Minnesota Department of Transportation is holding off on some projects through Labor Day Weekend to maintain traffic flow. Several lane closures will be picking back up on Tuesday. This includes the left lane of northbound I-35 in Duluth between the Highway 53 on-ramp and Garfield Avenue bridge from Tuesday-Thursday, Sept. 3-5, and Wednesday-Friday, Sept. 11-13.
