The 2019 Superior spring trail races (12.5 km, 25 km, and 50 km) will be held May 18 with all runners finishing at Caribou Highlands Lodge in Lutsen.

Held on the rugged Superior hiking trail that runs along the ridge line overlooking Lake Superior and treks through the boreal forest, these races are both technically difficult as well as a challenge for even the fittest of runners.

The 25 km and 50 km runners start and finish at Caribou Highlands. Runners in the longer race hit the trail at 7 a.m. and take off at 8 a.m. to start the 25 km event.

The 12.5 km race starts at 9 a.m. near Caribou Trail and finishes at Caribou Highlands.

The 50 km (31 miles) course record is 3:42:09 set in 208 by Benjamin Cogger. Emily Gordon set the women’s 50 km record on 2017 with a time of 4:30:32.

In 2012 Duluth’s Eric Hartmark covered the 25 km (15.5 miles) course in a still-standing best time of 1:39:09 and Grand Marais’ Emma Spoon set the women’s best time in 2017 by crossing the finish line in 2:00:26.

Wynn Davis holds the men’s 12 km record (about 9 miles) with his 218 run of 54:48. Bayli Maliszewski set the women’s mark in 2018 with her time of 1:13:30.
