Prescribed burns ahead for the Gunflint and Tofte U.S. Forest Districts

Anticipated Dates of Burn:
Prescribed burning will take place from early spring until summer green up conditions arrive. Burns will again take place late fall when grasses have cured. General dates of
the burn projects are April 25 – June 15.

Size and Location:
There are many locations and sizes of the burn units. Vicinity maps will indicate the location and size of each specific burn unit.

Purpose:
Maintaining openings will increase the diversity of wildlife species in the area by stimulating browse, grasses and forbs needed as a food source. Benefitting species include: Kestrel, Woodcock, Moose, White Tail Deer, Black Bear, Meadow Vole and many others.

Closure Information:
No closure of recreation sites or roadways are anticipated with this prescribed fire. If fire managers determine that smoke from the prescribed fire is likely to impact visibility along
roads and/or trails, warning signs will be placed in that area.

Resource Objectives:
To reduce encroaching brush species by 30 percent or more by using prescribed fire.
