Western Minnesota officers rescue stranded couple who drove on closed, flooded road

MADISON, Minn. — Lac qui Parle County Sheriff Allan Anderson is offering a tip of the hat to two sheriff’s deputies who rescued a man and woman who were stranded in floodwaters after driving around a road closed barricade at 3:49 p.m. on Thursday, March 28.
Sgts. Brian Benck and Cole Weick donned cold water rescue suits and used rapid water deployment tactics to rescue the stranded motorists.
The officers arrived at the scene to find the vehicle stranded in a field near the flooded road. An adult male was standing on top of the vehicle and the female sitting inside it, according to the sheriff.
The sheriff’s officers were responding to a 911 call from the stranded motorists. The caller stated that they had gone around a “road closed” sign and attempted to drive through the running water on the roadway. The caller stated that the current was so strong that it pushed their vehicle into the field.
