Cook County Vikings lose heartbreaker to Lakeview Christian Academy 71-63 on Wednesday

The Cook County Vikings faced off against the Lakeview Christian Academy Lions at Romano Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Minnesota-Duluth Wednesday night in the Section 7A semi-finals.
The Lions held a narrow 30-29 lead at the end of the first half but then poured in 41 points in the second half to win 71-63 over the Vikings. In the second half, The Vikings took an early 32-30 lead after two foul shots by Will Ramberg. Early second half action was a see-saw affair with the lead changing hands several times. Then the Lions slowly pulled ahead and led 54-43 with ten minutes left in the game. The Vikings went on a scoring run and narrowed the Lions lead to 58-52 with six minutes left in the game. The Vikings played extremely tough defense to narrow the lead to 61-60 with less than two minutes to play. A late 3 pointer and free throws by the Lions pulled Lakeview Christian Academy ahead 70-60 with less than a minute to go.
Senior Will Ramberg lead the Vikings with 31 points, Ray Gordon had 15 points and Pete Sutton contributed 13 points. The Vikings season finished 15-12 on the year.
Vikings co-captain Will Ramberg scored the first points of the game following a steal after the tip-off. However the Lions dominated the first half action taking a 10 point lead with ten minutes left in the first half. The Vikings battled back to narrow the lead to five points with less than 3 minutes left in the first half. The Vikings then continued aggressive play to narrow the gap to one point with 1:21 seconds left in the half. The Lions held on for a 30-29 lead at the end of the first half. Will Ramberg led the Vikings with 18 points in the first half.
The Vikings advanced to the semi-final game with a win over the #2 seed Nashwauk-Keewatin Spartans 43-39 on Saturday afternoon.

Earlier on Wednesday evening, #1 seed Northwoods Grizzlies advanced to the sectional finals with a 51-46 defeat of Deer River. They will play for the Section Championship against the Lakeview Christian Academy at 7pm on Friday night.
