Media Release from the U.S. Forest Service - March 7, 2019

DULUTH, Minn.  (March 7, 2019)  On March 4, nearly 10,000 permit reservations for the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) were booked using the reservation system on Recreation.gov.  Visitors from all over the country, including non-profit organizations and youth camps, will be enjoying the BWCAW this season. 

“I especially want to thank the cooperators who assisted with testing of the system and provided feedback over the past few weeks.” said Connie Cummins, Superior National Forest Supervisor. “Their valuable feedback helps us improve our process to deliver good customer service.”

With more than 70 entry points, visitors have many opportunities to enjoy the BWCAW. Hundreds of quota permits remain available from May through September, to enter the area, including holiday weekends.  Visitors are encouraged to have at least three travel options (dates and entries) in mind before they reserve a permit. In the reservation system, customers can immediately see what quotas are available and adjust their plans.  

The Forest Service encourages visitors to check out the many opportunities and to remember that self-issued permits are required to enter the BWCAW outside of the quota season, October through April.

One of the new features of the online system for 2019 is a “Walk me through” guide to assist visitors in making a reservation on Recreation.gov. The BWCAW, located on the Superior National Forest in Minnesota, is one of over 3,500 facilities across the country which utilize Recreation.gov to manage their permit reservation processes.
