Weekly Conservation Officer Reports

Jan 08, 2019 08:59AM ● By Editor

From the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources - District 6 - Two Harbors area - January 8, 2019

CO Sean Williams (Ely #1) assisted officers on Upper Red Lake and Lake of the Woods. Fishing success was good and there was no shortage of people or ice houses. Violations included angling with extra lines, no license in possession, and unmeasurable fish on a protected slot lake.

CO Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) focused on winter activity during the week and prepared for an upcoming work detail.

CO Anthony Bermel (Babbitt) worked primarily snowmobile and angling enforcement. Time was spent on a Division background investigation. Enforcement action was taken for an unmarked fish house, no shelter tag, angling without a license, extra lines, expired snowmobile registration, and expired ATV registration.

CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) focused on angling and snowmobile enforcement. Complaints on snowmobile violations were followed up on and wildlife-related calls were handled. Enforcement action was taken for snowmobile violations.

CO Don Murray (Two Harbors) worked the odd combination of snowmobile enforcement and open-water fishing on Lake Superior this past week. The warmer weather and calm winds brought out plenty of anglers trolling for salmon off Agate Bay. Meanwhile, most area trails are being groomed, allowing for some great snowmobiling conditions. Most area lakes are slush-covered, making access a bit more challenging.

CO John Velsvaag (Ely) observed worsening slush conditions on area lakes and slow fishing. Snowmobiling conditions are OK if riders don’t leave the trail. Several calls about the new pike regulations and the bobcat season were handled as well.

CO David Schottenbauer (Silver Bay) worked area snowmobile activity this past week. Trails have taken a beating with the warm weather and heavy use. Schottenbauer also worked trapping complaints in the area as well.
