Commonly known as, the Angle, the Northwest Angle is home to about 120 people and juts out of northern Minnesota but is surrounded by the Lake of the Woods and Canadian territory. It is the only place in the United States outside Alaska that is north of the 49th parallel.

It is a result of a surveying error made in 1755.

“Negotiators of the initial Canada-U.S. border misunderstood the geography of the area,” the petition says. “Make America great by correcting this critical survey error.”

We the People is a section of the White House website which allows people to submit petitions that potentially could receive a response from the White House. Petitions that meet a certain threshold of signatures, typically 100,000, are reviewed by administration officials who then can issue an official response.

The petition only has 794 signatures as of 3 p.m. Wednesday. It needs 100,000 signatures by Jan. 29 to get a response from the White House.

To get to the Angle by land visitors are required to go through customs twice, once on the way into Canada and then again when they enter the U.S. at the Angle.

In the 1998, U.S. Rep. Collin Peterson, D-Minn., introduced a bill to allow the Northwest Angle to secede from the U.S. and become part of Canada.

Peterson acknowledged at the time that the bill was “a ploy for attention over border-water treaty issues,” the Herald reported in March 1998.

Under Ontario regulations in 1998, non-Ontario anglers who fished on the Ontario portions of Lake Of The Woods and did not stay overnight in Ontario were prohibited from keeping walleye and sauger.
