The special season for lake trout ice-fishing on lakes within the Boundary Waters will start on Dec. 29 this year, and will run until March 31, 2019.

The BWCAW trout opener arrives about two weeks before lakes in the rest of the state are open to lake trout fishing, thanks to 2009 legislation.

Some lake trout fishing tips from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources include fishing on the bottom with a dead ciscoes or live minnow. Jig with ice-fishing jigs or spoons. Start in depths from 15 to 40 feet. Keep moving until you catch fish.

Although the ice is thick, be prepared and take safety precautions especially if you are fishing on a large body of water. Large bodies of water can have weak spots where there is a current. Anglers should take extra winter clothing with them in case they get wet. Avoid hyperthermia at all costs.

Even if it is cold, be prepared to drink enough fluids to avoid dehydration. Let someone know where you are going and what time you expect to be back. Have fun, but respect the elements. If you fish safely you will have more fun. And if you are safe, it’s more fun for everyone else as well.
