DULUTH, Minn. - Wednesday's storm felt like déjà vu.

It hasn't even been a year yet since last October's damaging storm. On Monday, just two days ago, the city started repairing sections of the Lakewalk damaged in the 2017 storm.

City officials say there is new, significant damage along the Lakewalk, although crews haven't been able to reach many spots yet because of dangerous waves.

"A lot of land, more land lost behind Fitger's, the asphalt path is caving in, as it had started to before," Mike Labeau, construction project supervisor, said. "Boardwalk panels are flipped up and moving around in the waves and wind. Rocks washed up as far as on the railroad."

Labeau said crews will try to get out first thing Thursday morning and begin taking a closer look at what will need repair. The 2017 storm racked up an estimated $10 million of damage.

Wednesday afternoon and evening, city officials were urging people to stay away from Canal Park, the Lakewalk and any flooding.

"Yes, it is an interesting thing to see, the power of Lake Superior," Interim Chief Administrative Officer Keith Hamre said. "But then again, we need to be respectful of that power of Lake Superior. It can be very deadly, very quickly. so we do want people to take care and use extreme caution."

The road along Brighton Beach was also closed, as well as the Lakewalk tunnel under London Rd. A Park Point parking lot of 12th St. was also closed this afternoon, the city said.

Utilities seemed to be working properly, they said. The stormwater system was plugged as expected, especially with strong winds blowing down leaves and the rain washing them into storm sewers.

If you see standing water in the road or want to report any road damage, you're asked to call (218) 730-4100.
