The blueberry pickers were out in droves Sunday along the upper Gunflint Trail.  The search for Cook County's most coveted delicacy is now even more competitive with the second annual Biggest Blueberry Contest now though August 11.

Businesses along the Gunflint Trail will host their annual Biggest Blueberry Contest again this summer! The contest will run from Friday July 20th – Saturday August 11th.

Blueberries will be measured by weight, and must be picked fresh and not store bought. There will be 3 Grand Prizes for the 3 biggest blueberries by weight.

Weigh stations will be designated at various resorts and locations along the Gunflint Trail. In addition to prizes for the biggest blueberry, all submissions will be entered to win randomly selected prize drawings at the end of each week.

Here’s a full list of this year’s weigh stations:

Blueberries in the Gunflint Trail area are just beginning to ripen and tend to peak around late July or early August. Wild blueberries are easy to identify, looking much like the grocery store variety, only smaller. The plants are woody shrubs, usually less than two feet tall and resemble miniature trees. They grow best in dry, well drained, rocky soil with good sun and are often found in recent burn areas.
