Grand Portage Lodge and Casino is celebrating the end of an extensive renovation project with a grand opening weekend.

The project included refreshing the dining area, lounge, and rooms, and creating a new event center, pool complex, and casino floor.  The new casino floor features more than 425 slot machines and table games including blackjack and three-card poker.

The facility is owned and operated by the Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, and the interior of the building honors the indigenous culture of Grand Portage.

"We are so glad that the dust has settled, and the building phase is over," chairman Norman Deschampe said in a news release. "The new Grand Portage Lodge and Casino offers guests excellent facilities to stay, play, eat, and host meetings and banquets right here on the North Shore. Our location is spectacular, our doors are open, and we want to share this wonderful place."

The grand opening weekend events begin with a ribbon cutting on Thursday, July 12, at 2 p.m.  There will be a complimentary gift for the first 500 players on Thursday.  A free barbecue will be offered on Friday, July 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and there are additional gaming promotions and events through Sunday.
