From The Duluth News Tribune - Friday, December 29, 2017

Two people were injured in a head-on collision between a sport-utility vehicle and a snow plow on Thursday morning in snowy conditions on State Highway 61 in Lake County.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported that a Subaru Forester was traveling south on Highway 61 near the Encampment River, northeast of Two Harbors, just after 10:30 a.m. when it lost control on a curve and collided head-on with a Minnesota Department of Transportation plow truck.

Two people in the Forester — driver Diane Helander, 63, of Finland, and passenger Leanne Buell, 62, of Silver Bay — were transported to Duluth hospitals with what the Patrol said were non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the plow was not injured.

Light snow that fell throughout the day caused a number of crashes around the region on Thursday.

The Patrol reported that as of mid-afternoon Thursday, troopers had responded to eight injury crashes, 29 property damage crashes and 20 vehicles off the road along state highways in the Duluth district, with more calls coming in.
