Northwoods rally past Cook County

COOK — Brendan Parson and Jake Hyppa each scored twice and the Northwoods Grizzlies stopped Cook County when it counted to pick up a big Section 7 9-man victory, 39-30.

Parson recorded 143 yards on the ground and scored two third quarter touchdowns for North Woods.

Hyppa, meanwhile, racked up 111 rushing yards and scored the last two touchdowns of the game to help the Grizzlies rally for the win.

Head coach John Jirik said “it was a huge game’’ played in hot and humid conditions on the first day of fall.

Neither team could stop the other for the most part, he said, with the weather making the teams too tired to play defense.

Cook County (3-1) led 30-23 in the fourth quarter before Hyppa scored the first of his touchdowns on a 32-yard run, which gave North Woods a 31-30 lead.

The Grizzlies then stepped up, Jirik said, and made a big sack that ultimately stopped the Vikings from scoring again.

North Woods also got 10 receptions for 128 yards and one touchdown from Tanner Barto, while Tate Olson passed for 181 yards and one TD in the game.

Cook County’s Josh Prom ran for 100 yards, while Ethan Sporn added 74.

The Grizzlies (3-1) play at Northeast Range Friday.
