A team of researchers kicked off a four-year study this summer that will focus on waves underneath the surface of Lake Superior.

The purpose of the study is to gain more knowledge on what are called 'internal waves,' which form where warmer, surface water and colder, deep water within the lake mix.

WTIP's Joe Friedrichs spoke with Sam Kelly, the principal investigator for the study and an assistant professor with the Large Lakes Observatory at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, to find out the details.
