Arrowhead Conservation Officer Reports - May 8

CO Darin Fagerman (Grand Marais) did a remote trout lake and BWCA patrol by canoe. The dark woods still have some ice and snow from the winter which is pretty normal for this time of year. Seasonal equipment maintenance was attended to along with division training in Hibbing.
CO Mary Manning (Grand Marais East) patrolled area forest roads and trails checking ATV operators and road conditions; grouse season this coming fall should be good based on the number of birds seen this week. The officer assisted with firearms qualifications in Hibbing and patrolled fish sanctuaries and spawning areas.
CO David Schottenbauer (Silver Bay) worked shore angling and spent time with youth in Silver Bay for their ATV Safety class.
CO Thomas Wahlstrom (Tofte) assisted with instructing firearms qualification in Hibbing. Steelhead anglers were checked, nuisance wildlife calls were handled, and watercraft was prepared for the upcoming opener.
CO Don Murray (Two Harbors) worked angling, boating, and invasive species enforcement during the week. Boaters are reminded to take the time to ensure all required safety equipment is ready for the open water season. CO Murray also attended division training and fielded calls related to turkey hunting regulations.
CO Anthony Bermel (Babbitt) attended firearms qualification, worked angling enforcement, and spent time in the BWCA. The officer received a call of a deer stuck in a fence; the deer got wrapped up in a heavy metal gate. Enforcement action was taken for failure to display watercraft registration.
CO Sean Williams (Ely 1) continues to focus on ATV activity in the Ely area as most lakes have been seeing very little angling activity. Officer Williams fielded questions from many residents about sucker harvest, and would like to remind people that spawning areas marked "Closed to Angling" includes sucker spearing, archery, and netting. Violations included taking fish in a closed area and fail to have lifesaving device onboard a watercraft.

Lots of canoes are starting to show up in town with no canoe registrations on them. Opening fishing starts next weekend, so remember to get those boats registered and to load the safety equipment such as PFDs and fire extinguishers.
