We discovered this area on a sea kayak trip 14 years ago and fell in love with its lonely beauty and intact ecosystems, returning every year since then to continue our explorations and, quite simply, to live amongst the Mayan fishermen who are now our neighbors.
Our objective is to furnish a quality wilderness experience
with a minimal impact/presence on the eco-systems and their inhabitants. With over 40 years of combined professional experience in the paddlesports
industry, we have witnessed the damage caused to wilderness areas by mass
marketing and overuse. We believe by focusing on educational and ecotourism activities
we can support economic growth for the community without promoting the
Reserve as merely a tourism destination. By creating awareness of the
delicate balance of such a Reserve, we expect the participants will also be
more apt to appreciate and protect this and other wilderness areas.
We have been exploring the Sian Ka'an by kayak since 1987, residing in the
area since 1990. We have a
son, Pat, who homeschools and attends the local gradeschool. For over 10 years we owned and operated a
professional canoe and kayak outfitting business and resort in the Boundary Waters Canoe
Area Wilderness of Minnesota and neighboring Canada's Quetico Provincial Park and Jim had been
canoeing, kayaking and guiding in those areas and on Lake Superior since the late 60s. So minimum impact
camping, watercraft instruction and safety, weather awareness, and natural
resources education are all second nature to us.
A love for wilderness areas, a great appreciation of the pioneer spirits
that tend to inhabit them, and a desire to see both live on, unspoiled by
certain aspects of modern civilization - these are the concerns that
motivate us. One must know a thing to be moved to fight for its continued
preservation. To that end, we invite you to share in this exceptional
space of life.
