FireWise Maintenance Regular maintenance is needed to keep your property Firewise. Keep roofs and eavestroughs clear of debris. Clean up leaves and litter that accumulates next to buildings and under decks. Keep grass watered and mowed on all sides of all buildings. Remove brush and shrubs that are encroaching on your defensible space, that area within thirty feet of your home where fire won't burn, or burns poorly. Decks, porches, and home structure with openings to the outside under the floor should be screened. Metal screen of 1/2 inch or less is best.
