Northern Fibers Retreat

February 14 - 18, 2018

Celebrate the Art and Craft of fibers in the heart of winter. This cozy retreat features a variety of classes, lunch-n-learn talks and demonstrations, a show-n-share event, and more, all while celebrating with other fiber enthusiasts. Co-hosted with the North House Folk School and the Northwoods Fiber Guild. Classes and programs will be offered at both the Art Colony & North House. 2018 Schedule of Events: Off the Cuff Julie Crabtree February 16 | 1 day Tuition: $95 | Supply fee: $13 Julie will teach students to design and create a stitchery cuff made with layered fabric on a base stabilizer. Students will machine and hand-stitch, adding in embellishments of beads, stones, and trinkets along the way. Stitched cord and bobbin couching will also be a part of the process and different methods of fastening will be demonstrated. A small pendant can be made with the remaining fabric to coordinate with the cuff. Soy Wax Batik Basics and Beyond Cyndi Kaye Meier February 16 – 17 | 2 days Tuition: $170 | Supply fee: $49 Make colorful and patterned textiles using soy wax and Procion dyes. Students will create three silk scarves and six cotton swatches for use in wearable art, quilts, or home décor. Soy wax is an ecological product (petroleum-free) that is easy to melt, apply, layer, and remove from fabric. Cyndi will teach color basics and considerations, as well as facilitate explorations of line, pattern, and design. Button It Up With Glass Mary Bebie February 17 | 9 am – 12 pm Tuition: $40 | Supply fee: $15 Finish your new sweater with your own fused glass buttons. Students will make 12 original one-inch buttons while learning the basics of fused glass. Each button will be an original design featuring a collage of colors, shapes, and textures. Attend the kiln opening on Sunday, February 18 at 9 am, or pay to have your pieces mailed. Stitchery: The Winter Northwoods Julie Crabtree February 17 – 18 | 2 days Tuition: $190 | Supply fee: $27 Students will design and create an easy painted background on canvas fabric. Julie will instruct on how to embellish with free-motion machine stitching. Adding bits of fabrics and fiber along with the layers of stitches will fill out a snowy tree winter landscape.
