June 22nd Guest Lecture: Sea Grant in Minnesota: 42 years of bringing Superior Science to you! Presenters: Jesse Schomberg is the Associate Director of Extension for MN Sea Grant and Dr. Tom Beery is a Coastal Resilience Extension Educator for MN Sea Grant. Time: 7pm Date: Thursday, June 22nd Location: Cook County Higher Education Donations are appreciated Jesse will provide a brief history of the Sea Grant program and it's ties to Minnesota, provide a peek into the details of Minnesota Sea Grant's successes relating to aquatic invasive species, stormwater, water safety, shipping, and K-12 education, as well as review how the program is responding to recent proposals to eliminate funding for Sea Grant across the nation. Tom will talk about climate issues and ideas for future work in north shore communities. Jesse Schomberg is the Associate Director of Extension for MN Sea Grant, and has been an extension educator with the program for 14 years, focusing on water quality issues, stormwater, and water safety. Jesse was raised in southern Minnesota, came to Duluth for college, where he studied biology and chemistry, and went to Idaho, where he received his Master's Degree, focusing on aquatic ecology and how land use affects streams and rivers. He lives in Lakewood Township with his family, including 3 kids, 2 dogs, lots of chickens, and a big garden. Dr. Tom Beery is a Coastal Resilience Extension Educator for MN Sea Grant. Tom has worked in environmental education in numerous settings throughout his career, including wilderness trip leadership, elementary education, Lake Superior outreach, and university education and research. Tom has spent the past 4 years living and working in Sweden as part of Man and the Biosphere Research group. Tom is interested in how we can craft nature rich lifestyles that support sustainability and human well being.
