Manually Setting up Email

Thunderbird

Normally, your email will be automatically set up when you run Boreal's installation CD. However, if you need to set it up manually, here's how you do it.  Please substitute your username (everything before @boreal.org in your email address) wherever the instructions say username or login-name:

(NOTE: Once your email is set up, the easiest way to check it is to send a message to yourself. Wait a few seconds and then check your mail. If you have configured everything correctly the message will come right back to you.)
  • Click on [Tools], [Account Settings].

    • If you see a line on the left side of the screen that says mail.boreal.org or is similar or identical to your Boreal email address:
      • Click on it. Then supply the following information on the right side of the screen:
Your Name: Your name goes here
        Email Address: username@boreal.org
        Reply-to Address: username@boreal.org

If these values are not correct, you'll need to delete and re-create your email account with the correct settings. Click the Remove Account button at the bottom of the screen, click Yes when it asks if you're sure, and then proceed here.

If they are correct, at the bottom of the screen verify that "Leave messages on server" is unchecked.

      • On the left side of the screen, click [Outgoing Server (SMTP)]. You should see one server listed.  Click the [Edit] button to change it, and then supply the following information:

User Name: (ok to leave empty, or username)

      • Click OK.

(NOTE: Once your email is set up, the easiest way to check it is to send a message to yourself. Wait a few seconds and then check your mail. If you have configured everything correctly the message will come right back to you.)

Internet Explorer uses the Outlook Express application to send and receive email. Outlook Express will open up if you select [Tools],[Mail and News],[Read Mail] from Internet Explorer.

If you'd rather have Outlook Express, from Internet Explorer click [Tools], [Internet Options], click the [Programs] tab, and on the E-mail line select Outlook Express from the drop-down box. Then click OK.)

    • Netscape 8: Netscape 8 does not include an email client.  If you are using Netscape 8 you'll need a different software program, such as Outlook Express, Eudora or Thunderbird to do your email.

Eudora

Normally, your email will be automatically set up when you run Boreal's installation CD. However, if you need to set it up manually, here's how you do it.  Please substitute your username (everything before @boreal.org in your email address) wherever the instructions say username or login-name:

(NOTE: Once your email is set up, the easiest way to check it is to send a message to yourself. Wait a few seconds and then check your mail. If you have configured everything correctly the message will come right back to you.)

  • First, start the Eudora program. If the "Welcome to Eudora!" wizard starts:
    • Click Next. Click "Create a brand-new email account" and click Next.
    • Type in your name as you'd like it to appear on email messages you send. Click Next.
    • Type in your email address.
    • Type in your user name. This is everything before the @boreal.org in your email address. Click Next.
    • Type mail.boreal.org in the [Incoming Server] field. Make sure POP is selected below this and click Next.
    • Type smtp.boreal.org in the [Outgoing Server] field. Click Next.
    • Click Finish. You're done!

  • If the wizard doesn't start:
    • Click [Tools], [Options] and on left side of the screen click [Getting Started] and supply the following information:
Real Name: (Your Name goes here)
      Return Address: username@boreal.org
      Mail Server (Incoming): mail.boreal.org
      Login Name: username
      SMTP Server (Outgoing): smtp.boreal.org

    • Now on the left side of the screen click [Checking Mail].  Make sure that the [Send on Check] box is not checked. This keeps Eudora from sending your queued mail whenever it checks for new mail - having this checked could result in mail you weren't ready to send going out anyway!

    • Next on the left side of the screen click [Incoming Mail] and make sure that the [Leave Mail on Server] box is unchecked.

    • Click the OK button at the bottom of the page....All Done!

Make sure "Remember password" is checked so you don't have to type in your password every time you check your email.
