Fifth Grade Class Report - Warblers and More

Description: 
My fifth grade class and I hiked on the Superior Hiking Trail today from
the Caribou Trail to Jonvick Creek. We started the morning looking at a
loon on a nest. Although the woods were very quiet to start, we later had a
nice warbler wave, and more birds throughout the day. The kids heard or saw:

ovenbird
black-throated green
black and white
yellow rumped
possible parula
white throated sparrow
song sparrow
swamp sparrow
ruffed grouse
wood peewee
chickadee
redbreasted nuthatch
raven
and an unidentified hawk flying through the fog who obviously had his
talons full of something good to eat

I think this puts our class list for the year at over 100 now...and we
still the rest of May and into June!

Woodcock in the brush

Seagull Lake

Description: 

A pair of Wood Duck on Seagull Lake, sighted 5/5/06.  Magnolia Warbler have returned, White-throated Sparrow are singing, Common Loon, Bald Eagle, Merlin, Goldeneye, Mallard, Common and Hooded Merganser, all very active.

Black Bear, Broad-winged Hawk, Bloodroot

Description: 

The black bear are out; time to take in those vulnerable bird feeders.  Lots of Broad-winged Hawk migrating through, or into the County, as well as Merlin, Kestril, numerous sparrow species, kinglets, and the first warblers.  Bloodroot, violets, and Virginia Bluebells  coming up in the woods. Also, Yellow-head Blackbird spotted in Grand Marais on May 2.
