How do I setup and use the FTP software?

If you have an older Boreal CD (light blue case) it includes WS-FTP LE, a FTP software program that's old, but still one of the best.  If not, you will need to obtain an FTP software program such as FileZilla.

  • If you have the old Boreal CD which includes WS-FTP LE:
    • First, insert the Boreal Access Setup CD into your computer. You may need to run the installation program. If it asks for an ISP Access code, click Cancel - you don't need it to install WS-FTP.
    • If you're at a menu screen, click [Install Additional Internet Programs].
    • Click to highlight WS-FTP and then click install.
    • During the install when you are asked who you are pick "other" then click on next.
    • When you are asked "How will you use WS_FTP LE" check "at home" under location.
    • When you are asked for what purpose you will be using WS_FTP check "for personal use".
    • Read and accept the licensing agreement.
    • You will be asked to choose the destination directory; the default is ok. Click on ok.
    • You wil be asked to please enter your preferred local destination directory for file transfers; the default is ok. Click ok.
    • The next screen will say "many anonymous FTP sites require your email address as your password"; Please enter your full email address, then click ok.
    • When it asks "please enter the name of the Program Manager Group for this software," pick WS_FTP, Click ok.
    • The program should come back now and say “Installation Complete Happy FTPing”, Click ok.
  • If you don't have a copy of WS-FTP LE, you will need to install an FTP client.  The instructions below tell you how to download and install FileZilla, a free FTP client:
    • Option 1:
      • Download FileZilla from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=21558&package_id=15149.  You will see a list of files you can download - click on the one that ends in setup.exe.
      • You'll be taken to a page of download sites - pick the one nearest you (probably Minneapolis, MN) and click the Download link.
      • Another page will come up, and in a minute your download should begin.  Click the Save button on the window that pops up, then choose a location on your computer to put the downloaded file.  (Desktop and My Documents are both places where the file will be easy to find later.)  Then click the Save button.  The file will download.
      • Browse to the location you chose in the previous step and double-click the file you just downloaded to install the software.
    • Option 2:
      • FileZilla is available in the Boreal CD library.  Stop by the office to check out the CD.  Then insert the CD into your compuer and the install process should begin.
    • Both Options:
      • The first screen of the installation process will ask you to select a language.  Unless you prefer a language other than English, click OK.  Otherwise, select your prefered language and click OK.
      • Read the license agreement and then click I Agree on the next screen.
      • You'll see a Choose Components screen.  The defaults here are ok, so click Next.
      • You'll be asked to choose an install location.  Again, just click Next to accept the default location.
      • Click Next to accept the default Start Menu Folder.
      • The General Settings window will appear.  If you're on a shared PC (ex. office environment), select Secure Mode at the top of the screen.  Otherwise, accept the defaults by clicking Install.
      • The installation process will now begin.  When it's finished, you'll see another screen telling you this.  Click Finish to close the window and complete the installation.
