Vikings vs. Nighthawks
The Cook County Vikings come home after a tough loss to a very good Northeast Range team last night. The Vikings already had a 25 point loss to the Nighthawks in the Ely Christmas Tournament, but had been playing at a higher level than on that night.
The Nighthawks started out the game hot, knocking down some outside shots to extend the Viking defense. The Vikings struggled to take care of the ball, also, turning it over 8 times in the first 12 minutes, while being challenged on many of their shots. Deschampe brought the Vikings to within two when she nailed her only 3 of the game, but NE Range extended their lead to 12 at the half when they drained 2 of their 5 first half 3’s.
The Nighthawks picked up right where they left off and pushed their lead to 35-20 when they drained another 3 to start the half. The Vikings bore down and kicked their defense into high gear, forcing turnovers and playing more aggressively offensively. The length and size of the Nighthawks, though, made it difficult for the Vikings to score. Three straight steals by Deschampe resulted in no points when their fast break shots were blocked on the other end. The Vikings cut the lead to 5, but NE Range responded with a huge 3 pointer and the Viking wouldn’t get it closer than 6 again. The lost drops the Vikings record to 10-7, with a chance to totally redeem themselves tonight with a game against Carlton at 6:30. It’s parents night for the Vikings, with parents being honored between the Varsity boys game and the Varsity girls game. There are also people preparing for light show introductions for the Girls game, so come on out and check out some Vikings basketball!
