Vikings shoot terribly, still win!

On Senior Night, when Cook County Vikings seniors Ailee Larson and Brea Boomer were honored, the Vikes came out with a swarming press that led to many turnovers and fast break opportunities. Much like all season the Vikings ran the court well, spreading the ball around with quick passes and nice cuts, but time and time again they were unable to convert the easy bunnies. What could have easily been a 20 point game at halftime was just eight at 34-26. To their credit, McGregor found the open girl and converted when the Vikings had breakdowns on defense. Hope Sorenson led the way with 8 first half points for the Mercs, while the Vikings were led by Boomer with 16.
After McGregor scored the first four points to start the second half, the Vikings went on a run to build the lead up 16 points. The pesky Mercs and the Vikings inability to convert on free throws and layups led to the lead holding steady. Boomer and Ashley Deschampe took over the game during that stretch, scoring 17 of the VIkings 19 points in the run. The Mercs knocked down some shots in the last minutes before Larson and Boomer were taken off the court to standing ovations. The 62-54 win was a nice Polar League win and inches the 17-2 Vikings closer to the number one seed in Section 7A with only a few road games remaining.

A write up will be sent out on Monday but not enough can be said about the strong leadership that Ailee Larson and Brea Boomer bring to our team and to this school. Three sport athletes that excel on the basketball court, their other sports, and in the classroom, these girls are great kids. They have such strong character and have put in a lot of work to get where they are today, they should definitely be recognized for their accomplishments on a daily basis.
