The Cook County Vikings had another week off with just practice before hosting the young Wrenshall Wrens. Besides their two seniors, Maria Burcar and Natalie Peaney, the Wrens have a lot of youth on the court. The Vikings matched that, too, with only senior Ashley Deschampe playing with fellow senior Bekah Laky missing this one game, senior Molly Zafft out for the season, and juniors Kaitlynn Linnell and Taylor Ryden also done for the season with injuries.

The Vikes jumped out to a 29-9 lead behind the quick hands of their defensive guards and strong passing, especially by Leah Utities. They pushed that lead out to 48-13 before Peaney knocked down a 3 to cut into the lead. Theresa Morrin answered with an and-1 drive and the Vikings took a 58-20 lead into the break. The Vikings showed some very aggressive play in the 1st half, going 13-15 from the free throw line, as well as doing a great job driving and kicking and dumping it off. Deschampe led the Vikings with 23 points going into the half, while she ended the game 1 rebound and 2 steals shy of a triple-double.

The second half saw a bunch of girls getting action and contributing as the [UTF-8?]Vikings’ young guards took control of the game. Utities played a great floor game, finishing with 13 points, 6 assists, and 5 steals in just her second start of the season. Morrin chipped in a double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while 8th grader Lily Gruber-Schulz notched another game in double figures of rebounding with 15, 6 coming on the offensive end.

The Vikings record moves to 15-8, including 12-3 in their last 15 games. There is only one more regular season game left, a home showdown against the Two Harbors Agates next Friday at 4:45. This will be the last game in Grand Marais for seniors Ashley Deschampe, Bekah Laky, and Molly Zafft, so come out and support our girls as we salute some of the best players this school has ever seen.
